Vauxhall has opened orders for the Grandland Hybrid – the first model from the brand to be offered with 48-volt hybrid technology – with prices starting from £32,415 OTR and first deliveries commencing from early 2024.

The new hybrid powertrain features a 0.89kWh lithium-ion battery, which is recharged automatically under certain driving conditions. This is combined with a new 1.2-litre three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, which produces 136PS at 5,500rpm and develops maximum torque of 230Nm at 1,750rpm. The engine is coupled to a new electrified six-speed dual clutch automatic transmission. A permanent magnet synchronous electric motor is integrated into the gearbox and produces peak power of 21kW (28hp) and maximum torque of 55Nm.

The new hybrid powertrain offers significantly improved fuel economy of 50.4-51.3mpg (WLTP) over the current petrol automatic option, which is capable of 43.4-44.1mpg (WLTP). CO2 emissions are also considerably lower at 124-127g/km compared to 144-147g/km for the petrol automatic.

The electric motor allows the Grandland Hybrid to be driven short distances on electric power alone under low torque requirements (e.g. when manoeuvring or under 18mph in city traffic). It also assists the petrol engine under acceleration, such as when launching from a standstill. During deceleration from higher constant speeds, the petrol engine stops and the e-motor acts as a generator to recharge the hybrid system's 48V battery. The battery also stores the energy recuperated by the regenerative braking system.

The Grandland Hybrid’s new petrol engine has been optimised for efficiency and operates in the Miller combustion cycle. This thermodynamic cycle is enabled by the variable geometry turbocharger, which enhances performance at low rpm, and variable valve timing. A belt-driven starter combines with the e-motor to start the petrol engine from cold. The belt-starter also restarts the engine quickly and seamlessly while driving.

The Grandland Hybrid widens the powertrain options available to customers, with the Grandland also available as a Plug-in Hybrid and sporty GSe variant, alongside efficient petrol and diesel engines.

Specification

In line with Vauxhall’s simplified trim line-up, customers have a choice of three specifications – Design, GS and Ultimate.

In entry-level Design trim, the Grandland Hybrid is equipped with automatic LED headlights, 17-inch silver-effect alloy wheels, and front and rear parking sensors. Infotainment is provided via a seven-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto™ and a seven-inch digital instrument cluster. Design models also feature a wide range of driver assist systems, including speed sign recognition, lane keep assist, automatic emergency braking and cruise control.

GS trim adds Vauxhall’s Multimedia Pure Panel Navigation system, consisting of a 10-inch touchscreen with satellite navigation and a 12-inch digital instrument cluster. A wireless charger for mobile devices is also included. For added comfort, GS features heated AGR-approved* sports-style front seats, while a heated steering wheel and rear-view parking camera bring further convenience. Visually, GS models are distinguished by 18-inch high-gloss black alloy wheels, a black roof and high-gloss black exterior detailing.

Completing the line-up, Ultimate adds Vauxhall’s class-leading adaptive IntelliLux LED® Pixel headlights and LED front fog lights. The parking camera is upgraded with a 360-degree panoramic view, while a power operated tailgate and keyless entry and start provide greater ease of use. Advanced driver assist systems, including lane positioning assist and adaptive cruise control, are also reserved for Ultimate trim. For added style, Ultimate models feature 19-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels and black Alcantara seat trim inserts.
