In the end the scoreline flattered Wales, two lates tries made it look like a close game, but it was anything but.

Italy were in control for most of the match and never looked like losing.

They fully deserve their back-to-back wins in Cardiff.

For Wales, a painful disection now begins.

After an encouraging World Cup last summer, they have ended their Six Nations campaign with five straight losses and a first wooden spoon in 21 years.

It'll surely be stirring up a few headlines.

Super Saturday is far from over though, follow our live build-up as Ireland go in search of another Six Nations title when they host Scotland (16:45 KO)

And then later tonight France host England (20:00 KO).

  2. 'We don't enough quality players'

    Sam Warburton

Former Wales captain on BBC One

The harsh truth is, Wales don't have the quality of players that they have had historically.

There are some great players, some excellent players, but there aren't enough of them.

Wales are actually quite a skilled team, they got it wrong today, but what they fall short of is the number of athletes and that's a long term process going from the age of 14,15,16.

The skill level is there, the athleticism is not. Mason Grady comes on, carries forward, Wales score.

Will Rowlands comes on, Wales go forward and score, that's why Evan Lloyd is looked at as a hooker.

  3. 'It's painful but I'm still excited for future' - Gatland

Wales head coach Warren Gatland said: "The fans will find it painful, we do as well. We didn't help ourselves in that first half and didn't get enough go forward or momentum.

"When we did, Tomos Williams started to open up a bit and we looked dangerous so it's probably some messaging around making sure we get some momentum going forward to get on the front foot. We were a bit lateral and let Italy defend us pretty easily.

"This rebuild isn't harder than we thought, we knew the inexperience we had in the squad and the players we asked to step up to leadership roles. For us it's about taking the good out of the games and showing what we need to do.

"I can't question the efforts to the boys and in fairness to Italy we didn't put them under a huge amount of pressure and they managed the game well.

"I'm really excited about this group with some youngsters who will learn about this experience and simplifying the game to try and get on the front foot which will help us."

  4. 'Stick with us' - Jenkins tells Wales fans

Wales captain Dafydd Jenkins said: "It's a feeling of complete disappointment. No disrespect to Italy but as aplaying group we want to win those games and beat those teams. It's just severelydisappointing.

"I'd say to the fans, just stick with us because I promise you the future isbright.

"When we go away from this environment we’re just going to have to getbetter as individuals and then when we get back together as agroup, we’ll be in a better place."

Italian captain Michele Lamaro said: "I want to say thank you to every single Italian here tonight.

"We want to achieve more than just not getting the Wooden Spoon, we have had a good tournament but know we can do better than this.

"The mindset of what we take into the pitch is something we've never had before we've gained confidence and worked so hard for each other. We've been through lots of difficult moments and now we can celebrate the good ones.

"Two games doesn't define a team, we said that after the World Cup and we'll say it now.

"We still have to be more consistent in what we're doing and be competitive with every single team in the tournament and that's what we need to do."

  8. Post update

    FT: Wales 21-24 Italy

Player of the match Ignacio Brex:

We are so happy we worked so hard for this, we are happy with the Italian movement.

It's easy to play with Tommasso Menoncelo, he's a real horse, he's a young guy with a great future.

After the World Cup we had a good meeting, we've improved our kicking game and our defence.

The Italian players are doing their lap of honour, but the Wales players have headed straight down the tunnel.

You compare this to the celebrations from two years ago when Paolo Garbisi through himself to the floor.

There's none of that, I think they expected to win here with the progress they've made.

  11. As it stands

    Jonathan Davies

Former Wales international on BBC One

Italy were the better side today, they relaxed in the final 10 minutes but they were very confident in their approach.

Their linespeed was good, they scored some lovely tries through Monty Ioane and Lorenzo Pani and they controlled the game.

Once Wales got on the front foot they looked dangerous, but the lack of deception and lack of power meant they couldn't break the Italians down.

  13. Players dejected

    FT: Wales 21-24 Italy

Such a sombre mood as fans make their way out of the stadium.

The players look so deflated standing in the middle of the pitch.

In contrast, the Italians are (deservedly so) showering themselves in Champagne.

    Emyr Lewis

Former Wales flanker on BBC Radio Cymru

There's lots of injuries that Wales have on the pitch, a year ago, barely any of them would be in the team.

Will Rowlands, maybe Tommy Reffell and Aaron Wainwright and that's it.

Wales have been better because they got over the gainline, Mason Grady was a huge difference.

    A brilliant finish from him.

  16. Full-time

    FT: Wales 21-24 Italy

    That’s it.

It’s back-to-back wins for Italy in Cardiff and a firstwooden spoon for Wales in 21 years.

It's been a whitewash with five losses.

    Caryl James

Former Wales wing on BBC Radio Cymru

We've missed a chance with Mason Grady this championship.

He's been coming on late in such difficult positions but today it's as if he's had a good 25 minutes and look at the chaos he's caused.

  18. Converted try - Wales 21-24 Italy

    Mason Grady, Ioan Lloyd

Wales get another try in the final play and it's just reward for Mason Grady who has been brilliant since he came on.

Ioan Lloyd knocks the kick over as Italy celebrate.
