Savannah, Georgia is known for its picturesque squares that are scattered throughout the city. With 22 squares to choose from, each one has its own unique charm and personality. These squares are the perfect place to take a break from sightseeing and enjoy some quiet time in the heart of the city.

Most of the squares feature beautiful fountains, statues, and stately monuments, and all of them have benches where you can sit and watch the interesting people passing through. These benches offer the perfect vantage point for people-watching and taking in the city’s vibrant energy.

One of Savannah’s most famous squares is Chippewa Square. This square has become well-known for its park bench that was featured in the 1994 movie Forrest Gump. This bench is where the character Forrest Gump sits and shares his wisdom while waiting for a bus. Tree lined Jones Street is in the center of the Historic District. It’s the prettiest street in Savannah, and is considered one of the most attractive streets in the entire US for its mid-19th century architecture, Greek Revival Houses, and its canopy of oak trees.

Some of the houses you’ll want to take note of on Jones Street are:

• Noah Barnum Knapp House at 10 West Jones Street: At the beginning of the Civil War, Noah Barnum Knapp was a prominent citizen in business as director of several of Georgia’s banks. He then became a judge and a very wealthy man. His townhouse is in the style of Greek Revival.
• Eliza Thompson House at 5 West Jones Street: This is the first residence on Jones Street, built in 1847.
• Alexander Smets House at 2-4 East Jones Street: This house is at the corner of Jones Street and Bull Street, and is also a Greek Revival style house. It was owned by Mr. Smets, a banker and philanthropist who was widely known for his collection of rare books.
• Israel Tefft House at 1 West Jones Street: The Tefft House is diagonally across from the Smets House. Mr. Tefft was known for his huge collection of autographs, one of the largest in the US. Some of these autographs included presidents, the Queen of England and all of the people who signed the Declaration of Independence.
• Eliza Jewett Houses: Eliza Jewett had several properties on Jones Street. She was one of quite a few women in the 19th century who were successful in the real estate business. One of these, at 112 East Jones Street, is now a rental property.
• Joe Odom House at 16 East Jones Street: Clint Eastwood directed a movie about Joe Odom called Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. Mr. Odom was famous for his open-invitation parties.

Walk Down River Street, Savannah Georgia

Savannah’s cobblestoned River Street is a beautiful and iconic destination that is known around the world for its haunted history. This street is steeped in the city’s dark past and has been the site of numerous tragedies over the years.

Savannah was originally built as a burial ground for Native tribes, and River Street was the epicenter of deadly labor forced upon the tribes and slaves of the time. The ghosts of these individuals are said to still wander the Riverfront, haunting the cobblestone streets and alleys.

During our last visit to Savannah, Michael and I had the pleasure of staying at the Westin Savannah Harbor Golf Resort & Spa. While the hotel was a great place to stay, we were excited to explore the historic district of Savannah. To get there, we had to take the Savannah Belles Ferry, which turned out to be a highlight of our trip.

The Savannah Belles Ferry is a free service that operates daily from 7am to midnight, making it a convenient and affordable way to get around the city. And the best part? You don’t have to be a guest at the Westin Savannah Harbor Golf Resort & Spa to ride the ferry. It’s open to everyone, making it a great option for locals and tourists alike.

As we rode the ferry across the Savannah River, we were treated to stunning views of the city skyline and riverfront. It was the perfect way to soak in the beauty of Savannah and get a sense of the city’s unique charm and character.

Stroll Through Savannah Botanical Gardens

If you’re looking for a tranquil and scenic escape in Savannah, the Savannah Botanical Gardens is the perfect place to spend a sunny day. This stunning garden is a true oasis, offering a wide range of attractions for nature lovers and history buffs alike.

As you explore the Savannah Botanical Gardens, you’ll be treated to a variety of gardens and landscapes, each with its own unique charm and character. The rose garden, in particular, is a must-see, with its vibrant blooms and sweet fragrance filling the air.

• Skidaway Island State Park is just 20 minutes outside the city. It borders Skidaway Narrows along the intracoastal. There is an interpretive center and plenty of boardwalks through marshes where you can spot wildlife. There are picnic areas and campgrounds in the Park, including air conditioned cabins.
• Tom Triplett Park Trail is 6-mile trail also about 20 minutes from downtown in Pooler. The bike/hike trail wraps around a pretty lake. This park is dog friendly.

Tour a Distillery

For those looking for a unique and educational experience in Savannah, the Ghost Coast Distillery is a must-visit destination. This local distillery offers free 40-minute tours every hour from Tuesday through Sunday, giving visitors a behind-the-scenes look at the process of making rum, whiskey, vodka, and other spirits.

During your tour, you’ll learn about the history of the distillery, the ingredients used in their spirits, and the techniques used to create their award-winning products. The knowledgeable and friendly guides will take you through the entire process, from the raw materials to the finished product.

At the end of the tour, you’ll have the opportunity to sample some of Ghost Coast’s delicious spirits. There are live bands each week at the Amphitheater on Fridays and Saturdays from 7pm to 10pm. In addition, there are free performances at the Beethoven Terrace from 7:30pm to 9:30pm featuring pianos, and each Sunday there is Jazz at the Myrtle & Rose Rooftop Garden from 11am to 3pm.
